SDCC 08 plans and goodies galore!

Well folks, the ginormous event that is San Diego Comic-Con is upon us, and I have tons of stuff planned for the show...

First, we'll have all issues of Super Real, and copies of Super Real Graphics Presents: Gnome, naturally.

In addition to that, I'll have the last of my 08 sketchbooks, new custom sketch cards to do sketch card commissions on, and also, I'll be giving one out with each purchase of my stuff with a quick head shot.
Then we've also got all the upcoming publishing stuff...
From the new Super Real Graphics Presents volume, The Wolves of Odin by creator Grant Gould, we'll have limited edition preview books.
And the from my new project that I'm unveiling at the show, PULP GIRLS (a mix of exploitation cinema and pulp hero inspired concepts, created mostly by me, and featuring tons of cool artists, but all with a girl centric twist), I'll have limited to 100 copies preview books, featuring 3 covers.
I'll also have a slew of prints for Pulp Girls too, including a limited to 25 edition print of Josh Howard's concept for the project, Stitches.

Additionally, creators Dave Dwonch, Grant Gould, Josh Howard, and Hector Sevilla should be on hand to do signings, just check at the table for times.

All this will be going on at space S16 in the small press pavilion, so please come by and say hello, pick up some stuff, or get a sketch!

If you can't make the show, most of the items are available directly from me/SRG, so just send me an email.

Please visit the brand new Super Real Graphics News Blog (your source fall all information on the different SRG products) and the respective pages for the different titles for more info, or my gallery for more peeks at my exciting new project, Pulp Girls, with much more info to come on that!

SUPER REAL NOTES - Marvel Masterpieces 2 out today

I believe the Upper Deck card series MARVEL MASTERPIECES 2, for which I did roughly 200 sketch cards, is out in shops today...

Someone pointed me to a couple eBay auctions for cards I did, and my comic shop had a couple cases (I bought one pack, never seen the cards before... didn't get a sketch card... they're one card to a case)

You can learn more about the card series at Upper Deck's website

Get more info on my cards HERE
or view most in my DeviantArt gallery or HERE

Or here's a hand LINK for MM2 sketch cards on eBay!

VIKINGS VS WEREWOLVES?!?!

Anyone?

Well friends, my new volume of Super Real Graphics Presents is official. It's been in the works for a while now, and I've been dying to spill about it, but the book is now setup with Diamond, so it's time to start talking it up...

The newest volume of innovative creator-owned graphic novella's is from my friend, Grant Gould!

Grant's a longtime freelance genre artist, known for his sketch cards and works for Lucasfilm etc, and when he started teasing a little project with Viking werewolves, it really caught my eye... now I'm lucky enough to help bring that comic book to the world.

The book is called THE WOLVES OF ODIN and is a mix of Lord of the Rings style fantasy, Norse mythology, and Werewolves!

Wolves banner

You can check out more info on the book, and get on the newsletter for updates, as it makes it's way to comic book shops this November (which means it's in the September PREVIEWS catalog, which is out to shops the last week of August for preorders) via the all new Wolves of Odin blog/website HERE

Not final cover art

I'm really excited about Wolves, Grant's art is just great, and the story here is simply amazing!! It also makes a nice transition from the first SRG Presents volume, Gnome, and fits perfectly with the line.

So, that's 2 Super Real Graphics Presents books for you to choose from, and with a little luck, more on the way in 2009!! Maybe even something by this Jason Martin guy that does Super Real...

Check it out, get on the newletter, and STAY TUNED!

COMMISSION TIME - Buffy the home invasion slayer!

Here's a recent commission for a full color Buffy the Vampire Slayer piece...
Since the requester wanted a full shot, with background, the idea to have Buffy in full on stake action atop a vampire popped in mind, then took on a life of it's own.

There's two slightly different versions of this one, the treatment here:
and one in my gallery with a touch more lighting effects.

As you can see I had fun with the coloring...

IN CASE U MISSED IT: Felipe Smith goes PEEPO CHOO tokyo stylee

My man Felipe Smith, the Super Real issue 3 variant cover artist, and Tokoypop MBQ maestro recently fell off the face of the planet.
Once his TPop manga wrapped, he went MIA.
A few weeks back TheBeat reported on him publishing a manga through Kodansha and their Morning Two magazine (in native Japan/Japanese).

Well, last week he finally got online and updated us all (at his Myspace blog), that he'd actually moved to Japan too.
And he is indeed cranking out piles of pages for a Japanese manga magazine with a new creation, Peepo Choo.
A quick Google search also turned up this little blog post with some more info on it...

Anyway, Felipe's talent is, I think, unmatched, and it's too bad the guy had to move to the East to do his thing, but at least he's doing it!!!

I'll have to find a way to source this stuff over here on this side of the rising sun.
But check out his work, MBQ, and now Peepo Choo, he's the real deal, doing the comic thing his way and bringing something new to the game... and does not dissapoint!

REVOLT!

MEANWHILE AT THE MOVIES... return of the ZOMBIE?!?

Rob Zombie took the film world not by storm, but by the throat...
No one expected the musician could parlay into a director, but his HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES quickly changed that mind set, with it's brilliant and quirky send up of slasher/horror/shock cinema.
He then followed it up with the sequel THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, an even darker, and widely received outing.
But with his next film, a remake of the classic horror staple HALLOWEEN, Rob really struggled and turned in a mess of a film.

Well, if this teaser image is any indication, I think the man is back on track!!!
HOLY S THAT'S COOL!!!

COMMISSION TIME - NYC Zombies!

I recently had the pleasure of doing a full blown multi character commission, with the request being that it had a similar vibe to my Cloverfield fan art, a group shot in an urban setting... but with zombies!

The requester didn't even want specific zombies, ie Cloverfield cast, superheroes, etc, just regular zombies. So to wrap my mind around it, I decided to use one of my actual pics from my recent NYCC trip, and the idea started to come to life, using a pic from Times Square, it would be "zombies on Broadway"!

Specifically, using this pic
The next challenge was what would inspire my zombies? Now, I've drawn some before (most notably an unused zombie variant of the issue 3 cover for Super Real special number 1), but not enough to just crank out the cool zombie action, so I needed a little direction to avoid some generic looking zombies... Then it occured to me to use whatever current pop culture stuff was rattling around my brain... and this was a few weeks back and I'd just watched the EliteXC MMA Saturday Night Fights on CBS, and brawler Kimbo Slice seemed the perfect subject!

From there, the rest of the zombies fell in place...
Zombie Downey JR, fresh off his triumphant appearance at the MTV movie awards

Zombie Lohan, also at the MTV awards, seemed a natural (and was really fun)!
But that left me wanting to do one more zombie, and fresh out of inspiration... then it hit me, myself as a zombie of course!

And so you have the final piece, with our cast of zombies making their way down Broadway... along with some adjustments to the pic...
Check it out!

Big thanks to the client for paying me to play with zombies, it was really fun!

MEANWHILE AT THE MOVIES... Hulk Meh

Caught me a matinee of the INCREDIBLE HULK this past Sunday, and after hearing all the positive buzz, I was prepared to be underwhelmed... and well, I mostly was.

It was good, and Norton and most of the cast were good to game, a solid outing all around, but it just didn't ever really get me too excited... once the Hulk showed up.
I was really enjoying the first arc, in Brazil, and Banner's story, and the elements lifted from the recent Bruce Jones/JR JR run of the series (the hoodie, the caps, the mr green and mr blue emails, etc)... I thought placing banner in that location was great, and it made for some awesome visuals.
The Banner chase through the city was Bourne level cool, but then, the Hulk showed up.
I guess I'm not in the grouping of those who thought the CG was okay in the movie... never worked for me (and it worked just fine for me in the first).
I'll take it though, as long as we don't get another satanic turd like the Thing in the FF movies!!!

So, yeah, once the Hulk showed up, I pretty much became unengaged...
It was fun enough, and by the numbers, but there was never any sense of drama, danger, action, or fun for me.
I thought the Ang Lee desert battle was much better than anything here.
And until I read a bit about the movie just now, I couldn't figure out why the hell they fought the hulk in an open field, on a college campus, with like, no one around. I mean, the army shows up, in force (sort of), and Betty's there, but that's it...
Oh sure, need some kids to capture it on camera phone?!? Wha-la, presto, 2 kids show up, but that's it.
Uh, where is everybody, anybody, anything?
Just the Hulk, and lots of grass
Riveting stuff ;)
Then there's the final battle, and sure, it's in NYC/Harlem, and there's people an stuff around at first, but then they go to a rooftop (at least I thought they did, but it seemed to be the ground when they were done)... and everyone drops away... except for General Ross and Betty of course, cuz they're in the story ya know.
Guess the whole thing was on not the biggest of budgets, which explains the sub par CG and vacant action showcases.
They must have blown most of the budget in Brazil :)

And all the little cool moments, dialogue bits, and crowd pleasing touches mainly fell flat for me, or were spoiled in the trailers. (But hey, the Stan Lee and Lou Ferigno cameos were solid gold!!)

Overall, it was decent, don't get me wrong, but I'd give it about a 6 or 7, to Iron Man's 8 or 9.

Oh, and what's all this talk, from reviewers, to viewers, about it being non stop action?
Sure, there's plenty, but I'm still waiting for a comic book movie that unleashes the level and scale of chaos and action that's the bread and butter of the stories...
Give me five more minutes of ass kicking finale, the climactic battles shouldn't feel like they're on a stopwatch!!
With all of Hollywood's vaunted CG and a new era sans limitations, how come every comic book movie feels like a Hollywood set piece, budget limited, watered down version of that?

Ah, I just expect too much... and wish they'd make the damn movies in high quality animation where they truly can do any. fucking. thing. and in style! (and no, the recent Marvel animation doesn't count)

What's the next comic book movie then, Wanted?
Gots to see me that!

MEANWHILE AT THE MOVIES... Guillermo the Hulk V Star Wars dance off!

Gonna go see the HULK tomorrow, but found this deleted scene on YouTube

Then for more movie fun, check out this hilarious Disney Star Wars dance off (which I found on my buddy Grant's blog, which is a good place for movie/genre fans)!
If you're not feeling it, be sure to forward to about the 3 minute mark before you give up ;)

I SAW IT ON TV: Battlestar Galactica season 4.1 finale

Well,

Another epic show's mid/season finale is in the books...

Season 4 of Battlestar this time

AHOY MATEYS, THAR BE SPOILERS AHEAD !!!!
Journal Banner

Did it live up to the hype?!
Who cares!!!

It was damn good, but no, my mind wasn't blown...

I was however quite shocked that we got to Earth at the mid-season mark though, that was nice. I thought we'd only get a fleeting glimpse of it in the finale, or you know a short lived time there.
Then of course, there's the twist, but not that big of one, when you're expecting one, or not expecting, but knowing there's one, cuz it's mid f'ing season ;)

Sooo, the ep, it was grand.

Lots of big moments, and pay off of the series, and the secret 4 cyclons especially...

But, is it me, or were they playing up that moment on the bridge between Gaeta and Dee?
Please, please tell me they're not putting them together!!!
She's soooo not on his level, and man, there's no character on the show I like less that Gaeta!!
From his increasingly greasy hair, to his lying on trial, and his annoying ass singing whilst losing his damn bitch ass leg!

Anyway, I thought Lee Adama's comment about children not reaching full potential til their parents are dead, was VERY telling.
Prop up ol Will Adama's tombstone right next to Rosalyn's (on Earth) in the finale!!!

The scene with Ad Adama an Saul was huge...
"I'm looking for options" Adama says...
Well, Saul's got one ;)

Then OMFG!!!
Anders (an Chief) exposed to Kara, point blank...
Was dying to see that play out, and I thought it was cool how she didn't go the standard Starbuck route and go bare knuckle, but got her s together and used it for what it was (that tricky viper, is it the 5th cylon? ...no that's the final revelation... hmmm).

But man, just how far did Kara have to run to spill the beans on that?!?
Ya know, to stop things at the last possible second... ;)
Did you really think they'd jettison Ty?!?

And I really liked Lee as the Pres, putting him at the center of things, just like Apallo on old school BSG... but ya know, in a different role :)

So, yeah.
Good good stuff.

But what's with this nebulous "COMING SOON" for season 4.2?!?
Is it really gonna be 2009!!!??
NoooooooOOOOOOooooOOOOOoooOoO!!!!!!!!

COMMISSION TIME - Iron Man sketch card set

Thought I'd share a little commission I just finished for some Iron Man sketch cards.

The requester had some specific suits from ol' shell head's long history in mind...

TALES FROM NETFLIX - Diary of the Dead

Just got around to watching the new Romero zombie movie, DIARY OF THE DEAD, last night. The new first person/handheld cam reboot of George Romero's classic zombie universe. I'd heard a mixed bag of reviews on it, and well, that's pretty much what it was.

It was good, maybe better than Land in terms of story, but man, I had a hard time with some of the cast, whereas the cast on Romero's last, modern, zombie feature Land of the Dead were mostly pro/recognizable/quality actors, Diary had a cast made of unknowns, and featured just some bad acting in spots (especially the lead Eliza Dushku wannabe girl, they shoulda just got Dushku)...
Plus, a lot of the situations and situational dialogue didn't ring true... like their reactions and motivations... come on, put the camera down an help the girl getting chased by a zombie, etc
It seemed Romero was too keen on driving his point home, to a fault.
If not for that stuff getting in the way, it would've been great.
It's too bad, but like with the Star Wars prequels, not sure if it was bad acting, or just bad direction... I mean in Romero's defense, these were unknown actors, whereas George had a stable of thoroughbreds.

Also, with both Land and Diary, I felt the ever present vibe of menace was mostly mia, and that's a staple of a good zombie flick.

However, there was some really cool creative zombie stuff though... zombies trapped in swimming pools, hydrochloric acid skull melts, shock paddles to the head, etc!!
And I loved the deaf mute Amish dood! He was BAD ASS!!!

I'm a huge Romero and zombie fan, so this was a must see for me, but for those who aren't, it's a mild recommendation. If you wanna see some kick ass zombies, rent the recent Dawn of the Dead remake, or the original.

MILDLY RECOMMENDED

I SAW IT ON TV: MMA v MTV

Couple cool big broadcasts last weekend...

First was the all new CBS SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS: EliteXC MMA.
MMA's been around a long time, lurking on odd cable networks, but recently has been getting more mainstream, with stars like Chuck Liddell getting featured on Entourage an the like.
Now, any time I've caught MMA on TV, it never lives up to the "mixed" billing, more often than not, featuring two dudes grappling on the mat, and not much kicking, or boxing, or anything else exciting.
But when I heard internet street fighting sensation Kimbo Slice, and American Gladiator Gina Carano (Crush) were on the card lineup, I thought, what the hell, I'll check this out on DVR.

And the first couple smaller matchups (they showed 5) were quick TKO's that didn't showcase much action, but what action they did, was more upright and exciting.

However, the next match was the womens matchup, and it was too cool to see Crush from American Gladiators take on an up and coming scraper. Could she really fight? Was it all staged? Would we get to see some good action?
Well, it turned out to be another great fight, and Gina could in fact, kick ass!
Though this one was stopped early, but her opponent, Young, was on the verge of getting her face caved in...
Wow!

Then the fourth match, the middleweight title bout between Smith/Lawler, featured two 6' guys, just under 200 pounds. An interesting weight/size for middleweight, and the in show hype promised two exciting brawlers going head to head, and the bout lived up to it.
It was really exciting, and mostly upright punching, something I'd rarely seen in MMA (to me, all the other stuff is cool, but not a cool as quality boxing in terms of explosiveness, so at least mixing some of that in is good to see).
Ultimately, it ended prematurely in the 3rd round, after some epic swings in momentum, on an errant finger to the eye...

Then, unfortunately the main event was cut off by my DVR, as the show apparently ran 45 minutes over it's programmed 2 hours...
I was, to say it mildly, po'd.

Turns out the Kimbo/Thompson matchup was also controversially stopped early, with Kimbo getting taken to the matt and nearly ended, and then coming out striking early in the third, exploding a giant cauliflower ear on Thompson and getting ready to blow him up... (I caught it later online)

Was the show a success?
Well, it had many shortcomings, the woeful XFL style cheerleaders, Gina not making weight, and questionable ends to all the main events, but it did more for MMA for me than anything else to this point. I saw some truly intriguing matchups and fights, with plenty of good action, and not an overabundance of ground action.
Also, the ringside talent was decent, with a nice MMA basics up front that helped.

I understand EliteXC is a bit of the minor league of MMA, but if they can build on what they started here with CBS, it's all good.
Nothing saying an upstart can't shake things up for MMA and capture a larger audience. Not to mention the buzz around this show is more than any other MMA event I've ever seen.
I know I'm eager to see more!

Then on Sunday, it was time for the MTV MOVIE AWARDS...
No one much cares about their actual awards, and the musical performers aren't usually too intriguing (it's MTV being all about the pre-teen audience after all), but the Movie Awards remains one of the only MTV productions that still plays to a wide audience with cutting edge entertainment (their music awards, once an annual staple of exciting programming have grown pointless) that doesn't dissapoint.
This year, hosted by Mike Myers, they kept the streak going.
It was a fun, often hilarious, show from start to finish, which was all enhanced by actually being broadcast live!
Good stuff.
Check out some of the better moments from the show, including the "viral video promo" for Tropic Thunder, and Seth Rogan and James Franco's (uncensored) blazing presentation:

I SAW IT ON TV: Lost 4.end

If you're as big a Lost fan as me, then last night was a big one.
The show is top notch all around, but they really go all out with each season finale, from blowing the lids of mysterious hatches, to giant 4 toed statue foot remnants, to mind bending flash forwards... the finales pack a wallop.

So how about season 4, last nights wrap up?

While not as crazy as season 2 or 3, it is a slow burner, stacked with plenty, and plenty, of tasty morsels.

I won't go into all of it, but man, I'm still in love with this show, and can't wait (8 months) for more!

If you follow the show and haven't checked it out yet EW.com's Doc Jensen is an indispensable source of scholarly Lost knowledge, check out season 4's finale wrap up HERE

SUPER REAL NOTES - Personal Sketch Cards

Haven't posted much lately, been real busy, working on many things, but if you have checked in here lately, you know I've been doing sketch cards. Both for Marvel Masterpieces, and also custom cards to sell.

Well, I recently took some of the custom cards I'd done, and created mini prints, actual card size (2.5x3.5"). A set of 15 different cards featuring an assortment of movie and comic characters, each with my info on the back and card number, to make a little collectible set to sell and give cards away with commissions and such.

Here's a look at the first set (side pic)

I'm selling the complete set of 15 cards for $7.50ea (shipping included).
If you're interested in picking up a set, just PayPal funds to jasinmartin@hotmail.com or email me.

I'll try and return soon with a full display of the Marvel Masterpieces series 2 cards I did (all 200)...

I SAW IT ON TV: at least, what my DVR recorded of it...

Missed the ending of the American Idol finale...
Yes, I watch the show, and yes I saw the finale, but for the second straight year, we missed the very end, as for some reason FOX can't seem to put the correct run time in the programing.

Had I remembered before the show, like I did as it was winding down, that we'd likely miss the end (recording stopping prematurely) I could've corrected the record time and caught it all.
At least it doesn't cut out before the reveal.

I'm somewhat surprised, believing the votes had to be for that other munchkin David.
How cool, and a good show too, loved the Tropic Thunder guys (Stiller, Black, and Downey JR) as Pips, and it was good to see George Michael get it together (guess I'm a sucker for troubled artists)!

Oh yeah, and I Am Your Brother, together forever! (Love that guy!)

Now, isn't Indiana Jones about to start...

SUPER REAL NOTES - Stumptown Jav-wrap

Weekend before last was the big local indie (or artist if you ask the promoters) comics show, Stumptown Comics Fest, which brought my bud, LA area creator Javier Hernandez, up to town for the show.
It was a weekend and couple extra days of comics, sight seeing, and good times (and uh, a looming sketch card deadline)...
Jav-man recently put his wrap up of the events on his blog, so pop over there to check it out HERE
(That's our Chihuahua, Choco, pictured above, not our house guest Javier! ;)

SUPER REAL NOTES - Much brewin

Hello all,

I've been keeping pretty busy as of late, in terms of what I've been working on...
A combination of things really, my day job resuming, the 200 sketch cards deadline (this past Wednesday, phew) for Upper Deck's Marvel Masterpieces 2 series, a series of 5 straight weeks of shows (Stumptown last weekend, a FCBD event tomorrow, and Emerald City Con wrapping things up next weekend), and the release of Gnome a couple weeks back. So yes, in addition to that I've been cooking up other things :D

As I've hinted at, in addition to Super Real (which has it's own developments of late I'm still chewing on), I've got another project I'm creating, that's continuing to move forward, on a global, kick ass scale... we're getting closer to me officially unveiling that....

Also, work continues to set up future volumes of the Super Real Graphics Presents original graphic novella series (with some potential really big news there cooking as well!)...

So, stay tuned, many things are under way, and coming to you all soon.

In the meantime, be sure and check out Super Real Graphics Presents: GNOME if you haven't, it's been receiving great critical response, and is a gem of a read!!

I'll be back soon with a comprehensive listing of my Marvel Masterpieces sketch card work (but many of those are in my DeviantArt gallery if you haven't seen them)!!

SUPER REAL NOTES - Stumptown Comics Fest this weekend!

I'll be at the Portland OR Stumptown Comics Fest all weekend (Saturday - Sunday 10-6)

I'll be sharing a table with my good bud Javier Hernandez (of El Muerto the Aztec Zombie fame) who's traveled up to our lovely city for the show!

I also did an interview on Javier's podcast, Planet Comic Book Radio, last week, you can listen to that here: CLICK
The same podcast/show has an interview with an organizer from Stumptown, and Dave Dwonch, the creator of my new OGN, Super Real Graphics Presents: GNOME

SUPER REAL NOTES - New York wrap up

Time for a recap from last weekend's New York Comic Con. Both my first time at the show and in the city.

The show ran 3 days, and I arrived Friday AM from a red eye direct flight via Jet Blue. Having got about 4 hours plus of sleep on the flight, I took a Super Shuttle (my preferred choice of airport to con/hotel transportation) to the Javits Center convention hall in the lower west side of Manhattan (overlooking the Hudson river).
From there I made my way, luggage in tow (all 3 heavy bags of gear) to the back right hand corner for artist alley and my 3 foot table space. Artist Alley's are generally in the back corners of cons, so nothing new there, but the double whammy of only getting a half table (I signed up for a full table, last June folks) and also being in the back corner, next to last row on an end, proved to be an unfortunate setup.

But before we sum up the weekend of the show, lets get to the fun stuff, more pictures!

We start out with a quick photo tour of midtown NYC, starting with Times Square, which was just a couple blocks from my hotel, the Hampton Inn on 8th and 51st...I've some nighttime pics of Times Square, but they're on my camera phone, I'll see if they're worth getting to the pc...
The MTV studios, you can't really tell, but they're taping (but they don't play music, so who cares)...
5th avenue as I head east on 42nd street, you can't really tell, but this is looking North, where the city just disappears into the horizon...Grand Central Station, with the Chrysler building in the background...
Grand Central should look familiar, as it was just featured in Will Smith's I Am Legend, and the scene where he loses it to one of his dummies...On approach, and just beneath the famous Chrysler building and it's art deco design...
...and finally, the Empire state looming on approach from Park Avenue. Manhattan pics, to be continued, once I get my disposable camera film developed... we'll see more shots of the Empire State Building, the subway, and Central Park!

And being out of film to show for the time being of NYC, let's get back to the con...

Undoubtedly, NYCC is a great show. Having continued to grow both in terms of size and attendance each of it's 3 years, it's quickly become the next best thing to San Diego Comic Con (the mother of all cons). This year, from what I've heard and been told, it grew in space and offerings tremendously. Also, from what I've heard, the attendance last year was around 50k, with reports for this year being in the 65 to 75k range (haven't heard an official number yet), which is about half or more of the 115k the SDCC did in '07. So, NYCC is growing, and chock full of cool people and cool things.

A sketch I did of Phontom Girl (form Legion of Superheroes) and for my good buddy Dennis Budd (Model Operandi creator and Super Real special alumni)...
Gnome with comic book luminaries; Fat Momma, Green Lantern, and Jugghead!

How did I do?
Not great.
Look, I'm a straight shooter, I don't lie or cherry coat. Exhibiting at shows is hard, mystifying, and a continual learning process. Just when you think you have things figured out, and get great results, the same shows yield let downs the following years. Or in this case, you got to a great show, but don't do as well as you should. Having heard repeatedly from others at the show and artist alley, that they were seeing the same thing, and having been in a terrible location (sure, any spot at a show this side is good, but really, I'm not kidding you or myself, the show on Sunday was nuts, but our corner of artist alley was dead, people didn't filter all the way back to our area, ask anyone by me), with the dreaded 3' half table, when I'm hard pressed to exhibit in 6' of space, there were a number of factors working against me. So, all things considered I did fairly well, and made back most of my air and table expense... but hotels are very pricey in NYC.

A half table is terrible, just awful. Not only do you have no room to work (sketching etc), or properly display (I have 9 books to offer, prints, sketch cards, etc etc), but perhaps the biggest danger is that you can blend into your neighbors. I can't tell you how many times on Saturday, people looked at my stuff, and then turned to my neighbor and asked him for a sketch or took his flyer. Now Julien was a great guy, and really talented, but he had nothing on his half table, nothing, just a flyer, and a rate card. I think it's safe to say, people thought he was part of my display. And hey, I did what I could, having my own table cloth, and signs etc. too, but Sunday, I moved stuff around, and seemed to mitigate that some...

But, those are the breaks.

So the show, sales wise, was a let down. But as always, there are other elements to a con, networking and meeting peers being paramount, and I met and caught up with plenty of cool people, and you never know what may come from any of that; jobs, friendships, connections, collaborators, the list goes on and on. Plus I got to pick up my copy of the Flash Gordon comic preview... which features the amazing art of Paul Green and looks pretty promising!!Outside the con, I was alone in the big city. I was able to catch up with some friends Saturday night and join their crew on a trip to an after party. Which wasn't all the great, but got to meet and spend time with some cool people... and then wound up walking home about 20 blocks. Walking around NYC on a Saturday night is kind of like walking Vegas, everywhere you turn there a people and places buzzing.

I didn't fly out til Monday PM, so I had Sunday night and Monday afternoon to check out the city, something I rarely get to do on con trips.

Sunday, I met up with an old family friend in the East Village who lives in Brooklyn but works in the city (delivering food, and other odd jobs)... but first I had to navigate the subway for the first time. He'd given me the perfect spot to catch a train right by my hotel, but I had some difficulty finding the right one and right direction. Seemed no matter which side of the tracks/street I came from, they were going the wrong way... getting off twice, once at the terminal, and once down the line after going north instead of south. Something about that station being a cross junction or what not.
But amidst that, had the nicest Australian girl asking me for help getting the right train to Queens, ha ha!

Once I got going the right way we met up, and caught up, first at an old Irish Pub with their own brew and sawdust floors. The place was packed, and they just seat you next to other folks at tables with open chairs. So after getting to know our new neighbors (a group of girls sending off their friend to the Peace Corps) we put back some beers and got to talking.
I've got to say, my evening, starting off with a night time walk through Times Square, and then to this point, had been pretty magical. Just fun as hell, full of sights, and great people. I was really impressed.

From there we walked to another pub/bar by NYU, caught some local beers, and then ventured a short subway ride to the Brooklyn Bridge.
What a cool bridge, no wonder it's so iconic, and a great place to view the city, and the financial district where the twin towers once stood. Even glimpsing the 1 inch Statue of liberty in the distance with it's tiny torch lit...

Having met up after 10pm, it was now approaching 2am, and it was time to catch a subway back to the hotel. Gotta tell ya, for a Sunday at 2am, the subway was more than interesting... yikes! Crazy stuff, one guy reading his lines, another talking to himself, and many other kooky passengers, but all things considered, not too bad. Especially when this train had a stop directly across the street from my hotel. How cool and convenient.

Monday afternoon I'd hoped to catch up with another friend, but that didn't work out. So I just took the walking tour of town myself, seeing Times Square again, the Chrysler building, Empire State, and then up to Central Park (all were amazing, some of which you see in the pics above, but check back for more pics to be added later).

Over all it was a good time, and under the right circumstances, I'd consider going back. It really is a great show, and even greater town!

IN CASE U MISSED IT: Clone Wars VS Tarantino

A sneak peek at the upcoming Clone Wars CG animated Star Wars movie (animated series pilot) is making the rounds.
Check it out HERE

Looks pretty good, and I'll keep hoping it's on par with the stellar Genndy directed cartoon series... if so we're in for a hell of a treat.

Also, if you're as big of a Grindhouse fan as me, check out this Italian Tarantino fan site.
They recently added some of my Grindhouse fan art to their gallery, and they've got a wealth of Grindhouse pics and what not there to peruse...

IN CASE U MISSED IT: Cool stuff!

If in your poking around the infinite sprawl of interwebs you haven't glimpsed some of the artist blogs giving peeks at upcoming new projects, then perhaps I can help...

My good buddy Javier Hernandez will up here in Portland for the April 26-27th Stumptown Comics Fest, and he'll have a new creation in tow... Known for his indy comic turned indy movie, El Muerto the Aztec Zombie, Jav's got a new character of equal creatively blended intrigue, the forthcoming Demolition Dove!
Demo Dove looks to be a perfect blending of the pop culture zeitgeist, grindhouse/pulp inspired concepts (a concoction I'm currently brewing myself), with a timely reflection of American politics. Now politics is the great divider, but it seems the Jav-Man is savvy enough to know this, and appears to be approaching them from a higher level non-partisan view. We shall see. Either way, I, and many others are intrigued about this new creation.

You can check out more on Demolition Dove at Javier's blog HERE

Then over at Josh Howard's blog, he's put up a tease of his upcoming work (following his popular ongoing runs of Dead@17, as well as other creations like Black Harvest, or Lost Books of Eve), T-Bird and Throttle. While not much has been revealed yet, the book does look to be Josh's first efforts in a more superpowered direction (and maybe even blending in some of his love of the Transformers franchise?)... As with anything he does, I can't wait to check it out!

There's something so special, and inherently wholly unique from seeing new creator owned works brought to life as comics, so I can't help but share in my excitement!

And if you know of any upcoming creator owned works being teased out there that have you excited, be sure and let me know!

New York Comic Con NEWS!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
APRIL 1, 2008

EXCLUSIVE SKETCHBOOK FEATURES JUSTINIANO, ELIOPOULOS
One-of-a-kind item to be featured at the third annual New York Comic Con

NEW YORK, NY-- Comic book creators Dennis Budd and Joe Caramagna have announced that they will offer a convention-exclusive sketchbook at the New York Comic Con the weekend of April 18th. The sketchbook will feature characters from their comic book property Model Operandi™ as drawn by Budd and an assortment of guest artists that includes Justiniano (DC’s "52") and Chris Eliopoulos (Marvel’s "Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius").

"Dennis and I are so grateful to all of the participating artists for donating sketches for the sketchbook," said Caramagna. "They all did such a great job and there is some great artwork here that can’t be seen anywhere else. If you’re a fan of any of these talented artists, or just a fan of good comic book art in general, you’ll love it, absolutely." Other artists that donated sketches include: Chris Giarrusso, Rich Molinelli, Brian Kong, Jason May, Jason Martin, Matthew Tow and Andrew Edge. And because the book features a bonus sketch cover, it is customizable to any fan in attendance at the convention.

Model Operandi™ is the story of a world-famous supermodel and her friends who stumble into trouble wherever they go. The first critically-acclaimed graphic novel "Affair of the Heart" was published by After Hours Press in 2006, and a special one-shot is due out in the Fall of 2008.

The "2008 Model Operandi Sketch Book: New York Comic Con Exclusive Edition" is sponsored by StupidVideos.com and will be available in limited numbers at the After Hours Press booth 2447 at the Jacob Javitz Center in New York City, April 18-20.
