ARTWORK: Dead@17 sketch cards UPDATE

My first sketch card work since Marvel Masterpieces is for 5finity's Dead@17 series (based on Josh Howard's comic series of the same name), which came out on 3/15.

I did 24 cards for the set, and got 2 return cards to keep/sell.

The first return card has already sold on eBay, this card, featuring main character Nara in her schoolgirl outfit with axe, from the original series...

But my second card is currently on eBay.

My next set will be for 5finity's P'ups: Pin-ups & Puppies featuring Mandy and Skoots, which comes out 5/15!

UPDATE - My last card has been reworked (see above updated pic) and relisted!!!

ARTWORK: Dead@17 sketch cards

The fine folks at 5finity (makers of premium collectors sketch cards) are releasing a card set for Josh Howard's Dead@17 on 3/15, and I did cards for the set.

Here's a peek at two cards I did...

And I'll have 2 return cards to sell for this set (one of which is the card pictured above on the left).

I'll post more info on this once I have it.

I'll also be doing a couple more sets for 5finity coming up!

SDCC 08 plans and goodies galore!

Well folks, the ginormous event that is San Diego Comic-Con is upon us, and I have tons of stuff planned for the show...

First, we'll have all issues of Super Real, and copies of Super Real Graphics Presents: Gnome, naturally.

In addition to that, I'll have the last of my 08 sketchbooks, new custom sketch cards to do sketch card commissions on, and also, I'll be giving one out with each purchase of my stuff with a quick head shot.
Then we've also got all the upcoming publishing stuff...
From the new Super Real Graphics Presents volume, The Wolves of Odin by creator Grant Gould, we'll have limited edition preview books.
And the from my new project that I'm unveiling at the show, PULP GIRLS (a mix of exploitation cinema and pulp hero inspired concepts, created mostly by me, and featuring tons of cool artists, but all with a girl centric twist), I'll have limited to 100 copies preview books, featuring 3 covers.
I'll also have a slew of prints for Pulp Girls too, including a limited to 25 edition print of Josh Howard's concept for the project, Stitches.

Additionally, creators Dave Dwonch, Grant Gould, Josh Howard, and Hector Sevilla should be on hand to do signings, just check at the table for times.

All this will be going on at space S16 in the small press pavilion, so please come by and say hello, pick up some stuff, or get a sketch!

If you can't make the show, most of the items are available directly from me/SRG, so just send me an email.

Please visit the brand new Super Real Graphics News Blog (your source fall all information on the different SRG products) and the respective pages for the different titles for more info, or my gallery for more peeks at my exciting new project, Pulp Girls, with much more info to come on that!

IN CASE U MISSED IT: Cool stuff!

If in your poking around the infinite sprawl of interwebs you haven't glimpsed some of the artist blogs giving peeks at upcoming new projects, then perhaps I can help...

My good buddy Javier Hernandez will up here in Portland for the April 26-27th Stumptown Comics Fest, and he'll have a new creation in tow... Known for his indy comic turned indy movie, El Muerto the Aztec Zombie, Jav's got a new character of equal creatively blended intrigue, the forthcoming Demolition Dove!
Demo Dove looks to be a perfect blending of the pop culture zeitgeist, grindhouse/pulp inspired concepts (a concoction I'm currently brewing myself), with a timely reflection of American politics. Now politics is the great divider, but it seems the Jav-Man is savvy enough to know this, and appears to be approaching them from a higher level non-partisan view. We shall see. Either way, I, and many others are intrigued about this new creation.

You can check out more on Demolition Dove at Javier's blog HERE

Then over at Josh Howard's blog, he's put up a tease of his upcoming work (following his popular ongoing runs of Dead@17, as well as other creations like Black Harvest, or Lost Books of Eve), T-Bird and Throttle. While not much has been revealed yet, the book does look to be Josh's first efforts in a more superpowered direction (and maybe even blending in some of his love of the Transformers franchise?)... As with anything he does, I can't wait to check it out!

There's something so special, and inherently wholly unique from seeing new creator owned works brought to life as comics, so I can't help but share in my excitement!

And if you know of any upcoming creator owned works being teased out there that have you excited, be sure and let me know!

SUPER REAL SPECIAL: VS The Movie Industry / PREVIEW 10 - Josh Howard / PART 2

Since Josh was kind enough to put a link here from his blog, I thought I'd go ahead and share some more of his artwork from the upcoming book, SUPER REAL VS THE MOVIE INDUSTRY SPECIAL.

For those of you new to the game, Super Real follows five reality show participants signed to million dollar contracts to get genetically enhanced, there have been four issues so far, and this is the second special, where I write and collaborate with other artists, this time, placing our cast in lethal situations from blockbuster films!

I've been sharing behind-the-scenes-artwork from the four guest artists, as we lead up to the book's release in comic shops this November.

Here's another page from Josh's 7 page section, featuring participants 4 and 5, in what looks like a graveyard with some undead inhabitants... starting with Josh's inked linework, then to my color treatment, and finally the lettering (for the first time handled by someone besides me, Joshua Crawley)...

What's really afoot in this scene?
What's to become of our cast members?
What kind of cool stuff will Josh get to draw?!?

Tune into the book to find out!! :D
Diamond Order Code SEP073951

Josh isn't the only cool guest artist playing with the Super Real characters and the nutty movie inspired scenarios, there are several more incredible comic creators contributing as well, and there's plenty more behind-the-scenes-artwork in the blog, and much more info on the book at it's website.

SUPER REAL SPECIAL: VS The Movie Industry / PREVIEW 8 - Josh Howard / PART 1

Some of you may have heard of this Josh Howard kid, he's done a few Dead@17 mini series for Viper Comics, to big success, a series for Devils Due, and even a book for DC/Minx among other things.

While cranking out his own stellar creations, and taking big time gigs, Josh was kind enough to help out some random dude he met at San Diego Comic-Con a few years back (that's me) with cover art, a couple times over, for Super Real, and being that I don't know when to say when, I even pestered the man into doing some interior pages for the book. Those pages are part of the new/upcoming Super Real Special - SUPER REAL VS THE MOVIE INDUSTRY, due out in comic shops this November.

You may recall in these weeks of behind-the-scenes art previews, that the new special, is double-sized, full color, and wholly written by me, and featuring a slew of amazing artists? Good. Well, if you've been following along, you'll have noticed that we've previewed all 5 of the featured artists (myself included... it's really all about me, me, me isn't it), except, one Mr. Josh Howard, the featured creator of the featured... the big gun as it were.

Well, I'm here with your first glimpse at the awesome pages from Mr. Howard, from the horror inspired section of the book naturally (hey, you don't want to type cast someone, but you gotta admit Josh has made his bread and butter with dark gothic cartoon gals - however, to my recollection, just by him taking this gig, it's his first superpowered work in the industry too... outside of pinups etc).

So anyway, time to show the goods, here's a page from Josh's section...
and it's colored by your truly! (see, I warned you it's all about me)
Yep, I offered to color his pages, and Josh was kind enough to turn over the inked files and let me have at them. Truly an honor! As was working on and assembling this book. I've hesitated to say it was the best thing I've done to date, not wanting to slight the creators who pitched in on the last special, but after adding them to this new books lineup (yes, there's another sixth, as-of-yet-unmentioned section that features most the talent from the last special), and having some very cool pinups added to the mix as well, I'm quite confident, and proud to say, this is the best book ever!! Or at least the best book I've done ;)

So, stay tuned, as we close in on November and the pending release of the book, there's still a boat-load of cool artwork to share!!!

SUPER REAL NOTES - Tales of the Sasquatch 2

UPDATED 2/15 - With link to preview pages!
Well, even though I finished my pages for JOSH HOWARD PRESENTS SASQUATCH last week, it's official today as they were delivered to the fine folks at Viper.

This will be my first published work outside of Super Real, and it's a project I'm excited to be involved with, especially as I see more and more pages from others on the book. To top that off, I've stolen a look at some of Josh's pages for the book, and I think they're some of his best work yet!

You can catch previews and info for the project at it's website HERE

You can order the book now, and it's due in shops around April. I'm not sure about showing any artwork from my section, but I'll go ahead and share this piece that features the "Yeti" from my section... Things aren't quite what they appear here, or in my story either, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

(Check the Sasquatch link below for more details on this project and my involvement)

UPDATE: Viper has now put a preview of the first 4 pages of my section up on the Sasquatch site HERE

SUPER REAL NOTES - Pinups

I posted recently about the new Josh Howard exclusive cover for the upcoming Super Real Special #1 - SUPER REAL VS THE COMIC BOOK INDUSTRY, and explained how Josh turned in a pinup for the book, but I decided to make it cover. So, I thought I'd share the original art, sans the cover graphics, so you could see the full on pinup design (as it differs slightly from what's on the cover). Mainly, I had to drop the word balloons, as Diamond couldn't promote it with the language as it is (and obviously, swapping his pinup title for the books). I thought the idea was fun, and also suited Shana perfectly.

You can check out the cover design in the last Super Real Notes if you missed that (see link below).

I also received another pinup today, from Art Assassin (aka David Harrigan). David is known for his over the top sexy pinups, and when he offered to do something for Super Real, naturally I couldn't refuse! Here's his take on Shana/Participant 5 (again) at the beach (also again), keeping cool!

You can check out more work from Art Assassin at his website HERE

I'm going to compile a book of the many Super Real pinups for the upcoming con season, so keep your eyes peeled for that, Josh and Dave's great pinups will of course be included!!

STAY TUNED,
jason

SUPER REAL NOTES - Josh Howard

Okay, officially announced today is the all new third cover for the Super Real Special #1 - SUPER REAL VS The Comic Book Industry, an exclusive from Josh Howard (Dead@17, Lost Books of Eve) that's limited to 500 copies.

When I was finalizing a line up of guest artist contributors for the special, I wanted to get one established/name artist to do a featured spot. So I put out some feelers to the guys I knew and was a fan of, just like with the variant covers, I wanted someone that not only inspired me as an artist and fan, but fit the style of the book. So, Josh was one of those guys, having already done the fabulous cover to the debut issue. His schedule being what it was (the guy is a mad man, he's launched 2 books, has an OGN coming from DC/Minx, and is putting together a giant OGN anthology) he said he'd like to do a pinup instead. So, I graciously obliged, but told him, I'd probably have a hard time not using it for a cover.

The story goes, as you know, I wound up with Jim Mahfood as the featured artist, and that turned out amazing (can't wait till you see his pages with Warren aka The Tool, aka participant 4). Then, again with his schedule bursting, Josh delivered his pinup just at the deadline, right before going to press on the book, but as suspected, the pinup was amazing. Even though it was very pinup in nature, as I've said before, his lines and sytle just pop and make great covers, so I decided to set it up as a new, unplanned, third cover.

After talking with my new, and quite awesome, Diamond rep, we settled on making it an "exclusive - limited to 500 copies edition", and having it be orderable as a seperate item via Diamond, at the regular cover price. "Allocations may occur" and all that. Hopefully this drives more traffic to the book, because with all the kick butt contributions from the cool lineup of creators, it's quite deserving! Not to mention that I happen to think that it's the most fun issue yet, and also a great jumping on point for new readers!!

So, get your order in if you want a copy! :D
