Night of the 80's Undead 2 - GeekRoom review

Another review for issue two...

Christian Mill of GeekRoom writes "I’ll just get this out of the way first and foremost, Night of the 80′s Undead is one of the most offensive, depraved comic book series I have ever read." ...but then proceeds to be won over by the book, "I’d definitely recommend Night of the 80s Undead #2 to anyone looking for an entertaining horror tale. It does exactly what it sets out to and will not disappoint your expectations in the slightest."

Night of the 80's Undead 2 - Horror Comic Roundup review

Hey folks, we've got our first review for issue two!!

Horror reviewer extraordinaire Decapitated Dan continues to pine for a more refined take on the concept (Well Dan, 80's Undead is full on gonzo day-glo coke zombie comics set to 11... no apologies!!!), but still likes NIGHT OF THE 80's UNDEAD #2 enough to give it a 3 out of 5... while his partner in gore-filled comic reviewing crime fully digs the book and gives it a solid 4 out 5!!

Saying, "Does this series make sense? Absolutely not. Is it a hoot? Absolutely."

Check out the review HERE

Night of the 80's Undead 1 - Reading with a Flight Ring review

And here's another recent review for issue 1, from the folks at Reading With A Flight Ring!

"Above all this was fun and more than a little silly but it just captures so much of what the 80’s were like that it’s nostalgic and campy and all kinds of goodness and if you want something that’s interesting and makes you laugh then ask your retailer to order this for you!"

You can see the full review HERE or click through below...

Night of the 80's Undead - Splash Page review

And here's one from last year, via a limited edition version of the book we had at NYCC '12...

The Splash Page really dug it and gave it a 9 out of 10!!

"This book is low brow humor at its DEAD/ALIVE EVIL DEAD splat-stick best"

You can see the full advance review HERE or click through below...

Night of the 80's Undead - Comic Bastards review

And speaking of ComicBastards.com, they did a review for the book a bit back too...

They gave the book a 4 out of 5 and say,
"their take on the zombie genre is pretty damn cool"

(Also note, some of the advance reviews were working from an early unfinished version of the book, with only partial coloring)

You can find that HERE or just click below to read the full thing right here...

Night of the 80's Undead - Comic Bastards interview

Here's another cool interview I just did...

This time for ComicBastards.com

You can find it HERE or click below...

Night of the 80's Undead - Word of the Nerd review

In the effort of staying fair and balanced (what am I a journalist?), here's another reviewer that we just don't connect with...

Of course they qualify their opinion of distaste by saying,
"Unless you enjoy just seeing panel after panel of comic book boobs, drug snorting, and cartoon-like blood."
Soooo, who doesn't want to see that comic is my question?!? :)

Read the full review on their site HERE or click just below...

Night of the 80's Undead - Fanboy Comics review

Another positive review...

FanboyComics.net really dig it, and even compare Bill to... Frank Miller!?!?
"I dig McKay's art style very much; it reminds me a smidge of a young Frank Miller in that he can capture the essence of a well-known public figure without it becoming a caricature."

Full review HERE, or click to see it below...

Night of the 80's Undead - Florida Geek Scene review

Here's another review I found from a bit back...

Florida Geek Scene give the book a 9 out of 10 and say,
"The short and skinny is that I had a lot of fun with the book, in the same way I have fun with Toxic Avenger, Army Of Darkness and Red Hot American Summer. Go read it!"

Night of the 80's Undead - Hero Taku review

And another fab review, as Bill said, either HeroTaku.com really liked the book, or they much wanted to make the tradepaperback back cover as a pull quote!

"Simply one of the best comics I have ever read"

Full review HERE, or read it below via the click...

Night of the 80's Undead - Sequential Tart review

Another great review from a bit back for issue one...

This time it's Sequential Tart showing their love, giving it a 9 (out of 10 I assume), and saying,
"Sweet, glorious, carnage, Jason Martin's first issue of Night of the 80's Undead made me feel warm and fuzzy in the zombie loving parts of my brain."

You can read the full review HERE or just click below...

Night of the 80's Undead - Joup.com review

Here's another positive review from a couple weeks back...

From Thee Comic Column on Joup.com

"Flash bulb pastel and bright, solid colors create an electric 80′s backdrop for some of the most bad-ass debauchery to smack the era of Reagan upside its head since… well, since Reagan ruined everything for everyone."

Read it below the click, or on Joup HERE

Night of the 80's Undead - Geeks of Doom review

So yeah, most all of the reviews we got on issue one came while I was away at SDCC...

But hey, look, some people liked the book too!

"I would strongly recommend that you give it a look, because behind the cover you will find one hell of a good time!"

Review after the click below or on GeeksofDoom HERE

Night of the 80's Undead - FearNet review

Look, more hate mail!

Another review during Comic-Con, from FearNet.com's Bagged and Boarded, where the reviewer doesn't appreciate the fact that Night of the 80's Undead has the amp set to 11... among other things. Like calling it sexist and racist. LOL

1) They claim it's MILDLY racist. Which at first threw us for a loop... but then I remembered, the "Asian twins" are intentionally written in a stereotypical fashion, in keeping with the myriad of 80's movies that depicted them in that fashion. And having done that, I made sure to try and offset that with some cool (if completely stereotypical) character beats for them down the line. Being sure that the characters don't just exist to serve stereotypical means, they ya know serve the story and have genuine character arcs that to me transcend the way in which they go about that.

2) They claim it's VERY sexist, because, you know, gosh, comic books shouldn't exaggerate human anatomy... sorry, don't do photo realistic comics. And, to their point, the main character does not have "unnaturally large breasts"... they're naturally large, and I don't mean that tongue-in-cheek, I mean to say, that perhaps while their size is not common, or average, it's certainly well within the range of nature.

So yeah, if you can't have sexy girls in comic books, lock me up.
And if you don't like them in your comic books, then, well, you don't want my comic books.
My female characters are always the lead, always kick ass, and always look good doing it.
I know it's not universally acceptable, but to each their own.
I don't write bad girl comic books, and I'm not going to ugly up my characters, or have them drawn in ways to pander to a wider audience, no apologies there.

I normally don't feel the need to comment on reviews, but this one brought up some good points I felt were worth addressing.

Find the review HERE or after the click below...

Night of the 80's Undead - Aint It Cool News review

Here are the final cover colors by me, over Bill McKay's 80's-tastic pencil line art for the third and final issue of NIGHT OF THE 80'S UNDEAD - due out in November.

As you'll see, there are tons of 80's references jumping off in the art, as well as most of our gang of 80's teens fending off hordes of coke zombies!!

Here are his original pencils too so you can see the before and after...

NIGHT of the 80's UNDEAD is almost here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My new comic NIGHT OF THE 80'S UNDEAD is coming out soon!

Issue 1 (order code APR13 0760) should hit comic book shops on 7/10 (and online digitally around the same time on providers like ComiXology and ComicsPlus)...

And issue 2 is in the current Diamond Previews catalog (the comics and graphic novels section, listed under Action Lab: Danger Zone, page 229) - order code JUN13 0713

Here's a look at the finised cover to issue 2 (line art by Bill McKay, color and graphics by me)
Our new masterpiece!
As you most likely can see, it's an homage to Justice League #1 (1987)... an 80's comic of course!
In this case, it's a murderer's row of 80's icons (and our heroine, Sarah, stage left)...
The original JL '87 cover.
I think Bill did a great job capturing the vibe of the original, while also perfectly evoking our 80's coke zombie celebs!!!

TEE DESIGN: Cobra Fett!

I've known for ages that I wanted to do some sort of Cobra logo tee of some sort, I just love the red on blue design so much. And for a while I wanted to do a Cobra/Boba Fett mash-up fan art, Cobra Fett, how damn cool is that?!?! But it took forever for it to occur to me that Cobra Fett was the perfect Cobra logo design too!

So here you go. Two of the coolest things from the 80's become one. Geek nirvana you can wear.

80's Undead issue 2 - preview art

Okay kids, I've been neglecting my social responsibilities and not sharing enough here and there, so hows about I start sharing some in process art from my upcoming comic, Night of the 80's Undead? Sound good?

Last year I was sharing production art from issue 1, but we're finally back underway with issue 2, so time to share more!!

On this book I'm doing everything but the all important drawing part, so the arts are by my friend and pencil maestro deluxe Bill McKay.

Here's the latest rough for a new page and panel he's working on... as you can see, it's chock full of 80's coke zombies, just like the book ;)
